Should I DIY My Wedding Flowers?

If you’ve found yourself wondering if you should do your own wedding flowers, you’re not alone. Many couples are exploring DIY florals to stretch their budget or simply because they enjoy the creative process. But before you commit, it’s worth understanding what is involved with doing it yourself.

You’ll Need a Supportive Crew and Plenty of Time

DIYing wedding flowers is NOT a solo project. You’ll need family or friends who are willing (and available) to help with the arranging. You will also need time. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes for each arrangement you plan to make. Pre-making arrangements can be a wonderful activity to do with your wedding party the day or two before the wedding and the time needed can be spread out and completed much more quickly than if just 2-3 people did it.

Day of, however, it’s better if you have a group dedicated to setup that is not immediate family members (siblings, grandparents, parents) or in the wedding party, since they will need to be available for pictures and all the other pre-ceremony activities.

You’ll Need a Clear (or Flexible) Vision

Having a vision for how you want your flowers to look and feel is important. But so is being realistic about your skill level and the tools you have. If you’re confident that you can learn the techniques needed to bring your vision to life, or you’re open to whatever the final arrangements look like, then you’re in a great spot for DIY. Simple styles, like garden-inspired arrangements, budvases or single variety arrangements are the easiest to accomplish on your own.

You’ll Need Time to Learn

Skills and knowledge you will need include flower care, techniques for making bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces, and supply lists so you have everything on hand.

The good news is there are plenty of resources available. YouTube is full of step-by-step floral design videos that can teach you everything from boutonnieres to centerpieces. If you’re crafty or already have experience with flowers, and you enjoy learning through tutorials, then this could be a great fit for you.

If you’re still weighing your options, a good question to ask yourself is: Does this spark excitement or overwhelm?
If the thought of spending time with your people, learning new skills, and getting hands-on with your florals sounds fun, DIY could be a great fit. If not, hiring a florist might save you stress and give you room to fully enjoy your day.

Another alternative is picking what items you want to DIY and having a florist do the rest. Couples booking with The Flower Patch have options for full or partial DIY. If you want to DIY your budvases and bridesmaid bouquets, but want a professional to do the bridal bouquet and wearables, then a partial DIY gives you that option.
